Living Our Mission at the Lab Bench

The mission of CND Life Sciences—to advance the care of patients who face the potential diagnosis of a neurodegenerative disease—is continually being fulfilled one test at a time in our CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited lab at our global headquarters at the Pima Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. Every day, our scientific, pathology, medical affairs, and lab services teams use the best technology to provide timely and accurate test results to the clinicians and patients we serve.

CND’s technology uses small skin biopsies and a combination of advanced laboratory techniques and neuroimaging to detect abnormal proteins within cutaneous nerve fibers. The methods require specially trained lab personnel to process biopsy samples about the width of a human hair. The lab team includes clinical technicians, quality personnel, and other staff, all of whom continuously enhance their skills to deliver reliable results.

The lab currently performs the Syn-One Test® and Small-Fiber Dx™. After the Syn-One Test biopsies are processed, they are analyzed by pathologists for the presence of an abnormally folded protein called phosphorylated alpha-synuclein. The test results can help clinicians determine if their patient has one of a family of neurodegenerative disorders that includes Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, conditions that can be challenging to diagnose. Small-Fiber Dx is used to measure intraepidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD) to support a diagnosis of a small fiber neuropathy.

All the work that takes place in the lab is driven by CND’s core values, which include being clinician minded and putting patients first. CND was founded by practicing neurologists who understand the value of accurate, reliable test results for informing diagnoses and selecting proper treatment plans for optimal patient care. And although our lab personnel do not directly interact with patients, they never forget there is a patient hoping for answers behind every sample they process.
