For Patients: Answers to Your Questions About the Syn-One Test®

A core value of CND Life Sciences is putting patients first. We understand that when it comes to getting answers about your health, the process can be stressful, time-consuming, and full of unknowns. If you or a loved one are considering the Syn-One Test, we’re here to help you with some of the uncertainty you may have about how the test is done and what it can tell you. Below are some common questions and links to more information.

What is a synucleinopathy?
We all have a protein in our body called alpha-synuclein (si-NEW-klee-in), but sometimes this protein folds into abnormal shapes and clumps together. These clumps are thought to be the main cause of Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, multiple system atrophy, and pure autonomic failure. Read more here.

What will the Syn-One Test tell me?
The test tells your doctor if clumps of abnormally folded alpha-synuclein are in the nerve cells in your skin. Your doctor will use the results of the Syn-One Test along with your medical history and examination to help inform whether you have Parkinson’s disease or another related disease. Read more about whether the Syn-One Test may be right for you

How is the test done?
Your doctor will numb your skin, take three (3) skin biopsy samples and cover the areas with a bandage. The samples are small (3 mm), so you won’t need stitches. Your doctor will send your skin samples to our lab to be analyzed, and will get your results in about three weeks, however this timeline may vary.

Will it hurt?
Before taking the skin samples, your doctor will numb your skin with an injection, and this may cause about 10 seconds of discomfort. Most patients report little pain with the procedure.

In CND’s Synuclein-One Study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 0.5% (2/428) of patients reported an adverse event of bleeding after the biopsy. The study did not include patients receiving dual anti-platelet or anticoagulation therapies.

Is the Syn-One Test accurate?
In the Synuclein-One Study, the sensitivity and specificity were >95% across the synucleinopathies studied (N=428 patients). This finding was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in March 2024.

How much does the test cost?
The cost will depend on your insurance, but we will help you find out how much it will cost before you have the procedure.
