Patient Information Guide

Your healthcare provider has recommended the Syn-One Test® or Small-Fiber Dx® as part of your care. CND Life Sciences is here to support you through the process and ensure you have all the information you need.

The Syn-One Test is a simple and convenient way to help detect the abnormal form of the synuclein protein that is common to neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and other related conditions. With the test results, you and your healthcare provider can better understand your health and help guide the best next steps for your care.

The Small-Fiber Dx test is a simple and convenient way to measure the number of small nerve fibers in the skin, or intraepideramal nerve fiber density (IENFD), to confirm a diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy. With the test results, you and your healthcare provider can better understand your health and help guide the best next steps for your care.

What to Expect
The test involves a skin biopsy procedure performed in a health care provider’s office, which typically takes about 15 minutes. During the procedure, three small samples are taken from your skin. No stitches are needed, and it heals like a small scab.

Insurance and Coverage Review
Insurance can be complicated. We are here to help you understand your benefits, costs, and next steps.

What happens first
Your healthcare provider sends a completed benefit verification form and supporting documentation to CND. This allows us to check your insurance benefits.

What CND does for you

  • Contact your primary health insurance to verify insurance coverage details
  • Determine applicable copay, coinsurance, and deductible amounts that apply to your plan
  • Confirm how much your insurance is likely to cover, including any limitations
  • Provide an estimated out-of-pocket (OOP) cost, so you know what to expect

How we keep you updated

  • CND may call or text you during the benefits verification process
  • Look for calls from a 480-area code and check your voicemail for updates

 Patient Assistance Program
If your insurance does not cover the full cost, or if you do not have insurance, CND may be able to help. Our Patient Assistance Program provides discount pricing, flexible payment plans, and CareCredit® options based on your financial situation. If you are uninsured, or if your out-of-pocket cost is more than you can afford, please contact us to review your options.

Preparing for Your Skin Biopsy Procedure
To avoid any delays, please call your healthcare provider’s office to schedule your biopsy appointment as soon as you are ready. Some healthcare providers may have special instructions, so be sure to check with your provider before the procedure. Below you will find some common expectations and helpful tips to prepare.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • The skin biopsy procedure takes approximately 15 minutes
  • Samples are taken from three locations: the back of your neck, just above your knee, and just above your ankle
  • Areas are numbed with a local anesthetic, like lidocaine, that stings for about 10 seconds, then allows the biopsies to be done with minimal discomfort
  • A small instrument is used to collect the samples
  • No antibiotics or stitches are needed
  • Keep the area dry for 24 hours. Bandages should stay on for 48 hours
  • The sites will form small scabs that gradually heal and fade over time

Tips for Procedure Day

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing for comfort and ease of access to the biopsy areas
  • After the procedure, you will receive written post-biopsy care instructions
  • Your healthcare provider will receive the results in about 3 weeks; however, this timeline may vary
  • If you have any questions, consult your healthcare provider’s office and they will guide your care

Our team is here to answer your questions, keep you informed, and support you every step of the way.
