Dr. Rajeev Kumar Discusses Syn-One Test® on NBC 9 News Denver
Dr. Rajeev Kumar, a neurologist and founder of the Rocky Mountain Movement Disorders Center, appeared on NBC 9 News in Denver to talk about the Syn-One Test, how it’s performed, and what the test can reveal about a patient’s neurological symptoms.
“This test is very easy, very well tolerated by patients, and takes about 20 minutes,” said Dr. Kumar, who describes the process of taking three very small skin samples, one from the back of a patient’s neck and two from the back of the leg. The minimally invasive procedure does not require stitches.
The skin samples are sent to CND Life Sciences’ laboratory in Scottdale, AZ where they are analyzed for the presence of phosphorylated alpha-synuclein, a misfolded protein associated with Parkinson’s, dementia with Lewy bodies, and related disorders. Dr. Kumar notes that it helps in cases when clinicians are unsure of a patient’s diagnosis or when patients have symptoms of more than one neurological condition.
“It can lead to patients being diagnosed earlier and treated earlier, which is great for patients.” Dr. Kumar adds that the Syn-One Test could potentially help researchers who are developing treatments for Parkinson’s disease, a condition for which there are no disease-modifying treatments currently available.
“It gives us and the patient more certainty, more confidence to go forward, and as a result, less anxiety,” added Dr. Kumar.
